Dairy Free

A week ago we took Eliana off milk and milk products (specifically those containing casein). In just a couple days we saw a pretty significant improvement in her behavior. It's been sad for us as parents, because we don't want to admit that Eliana is allergic to anything or has to have a "special" diet. She can't eat mac and cheese at friends' houses. She can't drink milk. We have to buy expensive soy cheese (because she can't live without cheese... we tried.) and make a point to give her calcium fortified drinks (like rice milk - which she really doesn't care for, and orange juice - which, thankfully, she loves!) and make sure she is getting all the nutrition her growing body needs. It's so much easier when she just drinks a lot of milk. But for the first time in a long time, she is not acting like a crazy spaz, she's just acting like a normal 2 year old. She sat and listened to a story at Kindermusik for the first time yesterday without getting up and down, interrupting, sitting on other kids, trying to turn pages while the teacher was still reading... What a difference from a week ago!

So, this is my official announcement... Ellie is allergic to milk and milk products.

I probably won't say too much more on the matter over here on this blog, but if you'd like to follow our dairy free adventures, they're going on at Train Up a Child.

You will be amazed at how quickly the necessary changes are incorporated into your life. Try oat milk (expensive, but a nice treat some times) as an alternative to rice milk. And, can she do goat milk or goat milk cheese products? When I was off cow dairy I had some wonderful sheep dairy products too, and I know it can be really fun to find something you just love in those areas. Glad you are pleased with the results of the changes.

i was going to recommend goat milk for everything too. you can milk your own rice milk too :) i personally stay away from soy for other reasons, but most people who have a true allergy to milk will also have an allergy to soy, so watch out for that.
try to find someone who will sell you fresh (noncow)milk from their own farm it's usually cheaper that way.

We might try goat cheese. She seems to be happy without drinking milk for now, so I'm not going to try too hard on that. We are staying away from soy milk and large quantities of soy for her, but if she's happy with a single slice of soy cheese every day or every other day to satisfy the cheese cravings, I am not too worried about that soy consumption. Still, goat cheese might be a nice alternative, especially for feta and cottage cheese (if they make cottage cheese out of goat's milk?) since I haven't yet found alternatives for those.

Goat's milk does have casein in it, though considerably less than cow's, and we think it might be the casein that's the problem, so we'll see.

I read your post and could have thought it was something I had written. Just change the name to Josh and make it corn. We took him off of corn and corn products 2 days ago and already see a calmer less wild man. What a change.
